As cases among public school students swell, most Alabama schools are requiring masks, according to press reports.
Here in Marion County, the two local school systems have taken different policy directions on the use of face coverings. The Winfield City Schools System announced prior to the beginning of the school year that it would require students to wear masks while on campus. The Marion County Board of Education never brought the topic up for a vote for county schools but has recommended that students and teachers wear them.
Optional masking is a unique approach for the northwest Alabama region, with Fayette, Franklin, Lamar, Tuscaloosa and Winston counties all not requiring coverings. Haleyville City Schools is requiring them based on positive case volumes, while Russellville City and Tuscaloosa City schools are mandating them.
