Pirates crest Green Wave

WINFIELD — The Winfield Pirates hosted the Gordo Green Wave on Thursday, Jan. 12.
Both Winfield varsity teams were victorious, the boys winning 60-40 and the girls winning 56-42.
The Lady Pirates took an early 10-8 lead in the first quarter but picked up the pace in the second quarter, scoring 14 more points to Gordo’s 5. Gordo came out of half time and outscored the Lady Pirates in the third quarter but slowed down enough in the final quarter that the Lady Pirates were able to maintain their lead and win the game.
Tinsley Franks was the lead scorer for the Lady Pirates with 16 points, 15 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block.
Gracie McCarty scored 12 points, along with making 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
Kylah May scored 8 points and  made 1 rebound and 1 steal.
The Pirates boys’ team also ended the first quarter with a 2 point lead, 16-14. In the second quarter, the game was still close, with Gordo scoring 8 points and Winfield scoring 10.
Ahead by 4 points, the Pirates came out of half time with a vengeance, scoring 18 points to Gordo’s 2.
Both teams scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, which didn’t give Gordo enough to sink the Pirates before the buzzer.
Slate Gilbert led the Pirates in scoring with 17 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block.
Preston Nelson scored 7 points, and recorded 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals.
Tyler Mays scored 6 points and made 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
Drew Cook grabbed the most rebounds with 5 total, along with 5 assists and 4 steals.
The win for the Lady Pirates puts them at 5-0 in area play, and the Pirates are now 3-2 in area play.
