A dream come true. This is the way the pupils and the teachers of the Hamilton Elementary School speak when they are asked about their recently completed library.
The library, an up to date one with books to suit every grade level in school, has been talked about and dreamed about for a long time by the faculty, parents and children of this school.
So, this fall when the Diversified Occupation classes moved to new quarters, work was begun immediately to convert the room into a desirable atmosphere for reading. During the fall harvest season, the walls were painted a light green, and shelves were put up.
The library is furnished with 40 leather bottomed chairs and six mahogany tables with plexiglas tops and two desks. The reference books consist of one volume of Childcraft, two sets of World Books, one set of Junior Britannica, one set of Compton’s and two sets of the American College Encyclopedia Dictionary.
The 350 books on the shelves fall into many categories, such as religion, art, adventure, fiction, history, geography, mythology, fairy tales and social science.
Many of these books have been awarded the Charles W. Fellett, Neweberry and Calder-Cott awards and medals, which means they are the best in children’s literature.
All of this has been accomplished at a moderate expense. The books were obtained from a book fair, faculty contributions, donations from pupils, parents, civic clubs, Parent-Teachers (Organization) and citizens who were interested enough to help.
The tables, chairs, plexiglas and desks were obtained from the State Agency for Surplus Property (Army Surplus).
Schedules have been worked out for every class in school to have time for pleasure reading or reference work.
The elementary school faculty would like to express their appreciation to all who have helped to make this library possible.
