Gary Ward

Dr. Gary Wayne Ward was born May 6, 1953, to Uless Dewey “Hob” and Bertha Dobbs Ward in Fayette County, Alabama. The youngest of a family of four sisters and one brother, he always had playmates and being the youngest was always the student. This proved to be instrumental in his developing a love for education. His mother died when he was ten years old, and his sisters helped raise him. The family lived on a farm and raised cattle and truck crops.

Lola Mann

Lola Ann Isom Mann, 99, gained her angel wings from her Heavenly Father on April 9th, 2024. Regarding her legacy, she will be remembered as a woman of great faith. She could see the presence of the Lord in all people. Mrs. Mann was born on Feb. 9, 1925 to Fremon and Dollie Isom of Hackleburg, Alabama. She was the second child born of fourteen children: Elijah, Lola, Newton, Cullen, Rubie, Irma Jewel, Julian, Curtis, Nela Dean, Joe, Fay, Jimmy, Billy Fray, and Kenneth. Mrs. Mann loved and enjoyed growing up in a large family.

Lydia Hawkins

Lydia Montijo Hawkins, 81, of Pickerington, Ohio passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Mount Carmel East Hospital.
She was born in San Jose, Calif. on Thursday, Aug. 27, 1942, to Gabriel Salazar Montijo and Margaret Gomez Montijo.  

Sandra Dunavant

Mrs. Sandra Faye Howell Dunavant, 76 of the Bazemore community, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at her residence. Mrs. Dunavant was born in Winfield on Nov. 14, 1947 to Boyd Ray and Ara Wyers Howell.  Mrs. Dunavant was a member of the Whites Chapel Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School and assisted with VBS for over 20 years. Sandra attended Hubbertville High School, she later earned her GED and an LPN degree. She was employed with Winfield Hospital for many years and later with Dr. Dale Spruiell at Winfield Internal Medicine until her retirement.

Paul Carter

James Paul Carter was born on May 16, 1941 to Charlie Carter and Evelyn Rye Carter in Detroit, Ala. He was the oldest of four children, including a sister, Polly, and two brothers, John Thomas (JT) and Dennis Wayne. From a young age, Paul was a hard worker. After high school, Paul would travel between Alabama and Michigan with his uncles and would do various jobs along the way. While working on a farm, he met the woman who would become his wife, Linda Cantrell.

Dominique Bennett

Dominique Renikka (Nique) Bennett, 36, of Tuscaloosa passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at her residence. She was born in San Francisca, Calif. on June 22, 1987, to Gregory Bennett and Vicky Wallace.  

Larry Box

Larry Fred Box was born on Oct. 4, 1948, in Jasper to Willie Fred and Mildred Norris Box. He was the oldest of 4 children, being preceded in death by his sister, Pam, and survived by his brothers, Scott (Linda) and Lyndon (Lesleigh). Larry was raised in Rock City, graduating from Winfield City High School in 1966 and attending Walker College after high school. In October 1971, Larry began working on the railroad, and he would continue in that job for over 37 years, retiring in 2008.

Corinne Bobo

Corinne Bobo, 90, of Hamilton passed away on Friday, April 12, 2024, at her residence.
She was born in Hamilton on Sunday, May 28, 1933, to Russ Casey and Lela Hall Casey.
Preceding in death are her mother and father, Lela Hall Casey and Russ Casey; her siblings, Willard Ray, Woodrow Rex, and Pauline Casey (Webb); and her son, Theo Bobo, Jr.

Shirley Ballew

Shirley Sue Hill Ballew of Detroit, Ala. went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 28, 2024, in her home after a sequence of illnesses.
Preceded in death by her husband, John Lee Ballew; parents, James Francis Hill and Ressie Creed Hill; brother James Albert Hill; sisters, Maudine Karr, Bessie Gray and stepdaughter, Terry Farquhar.

Joy Wates

Joy Amanda Wates, 41, of Hamilton, formerly of Guin, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2024, in the Northwest Medical Center in Winfield.
Born Dec. 6, 1982 in Amory, Miss., she was the daughter of Linda Powless Wates and the late Lynn Wates. Mrs. Wates lived in Guin and Hamilton most of her life.
She is survived by her mother, Linda Wates; daughter, Josie Cox; sons, Anthony and Aaron Cox; sister, Gina Wates; and brother, Greg Wates.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lynn Wates.

William Franks

Mr. William Garrison Franks, 91, of Brilliant passed away on Sunday April 7, 2024, in the Northwest Medical Center. Garrison was born Jan. 21, 1933 to Dewey and Ila Hollis Franks. He was a member of the Freewater Freewill Baptist Church for many years. Garrison was employed with the Winfield Cotton Mill Fruit of the Loom for nearly 40 years before his retirement.

Dude Mayfield

Mr. Kenneth Richard “Dude” Mayfield, 81, of Winfield passed away peacefully on April 9, 2024 in the UAB Hospital. Dude was born on May 10, 1942 to John Thomas and Carra Townley Mayfield. He was a graduate of Brilliant High School and married the love of his life Estalene Tucker. He worked as a coal miner for many years until his retirement. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching Alabama football, tending to his chickens, and gardening. You could normally catch him sitting outside watching hummingbirds and the flowers blooming. One of his greatest achievements was being called Pop.

Gloria Stovall

Mrs. Gloria D. Stovall, 79, of Winfield passed away on Sunday, April 7. 2024, at her residence. Gloria was born Oct. 31, 1944 to Brody and Addine Miles Rose. She was a member of the Winfield Church of Christ and a 1963 graduate of Winfield City High School. Gloria was employed for many years as a dental assistant for Dr. George Mann and Dr. Max Thomas, as a kindergarten teacher’s aide with Winfield Elementary School, with the Marion County Board of Registrars from 1996 until 2000, and later with her family business, Stovall Contractors until her retirement.

Bobby Boyett

Bobby Hugh Boyett, 85, of Hamilton,, passed away April 1, 2024, at his residence. He was born Feb. 25, 1939  in Hamilton to the late Ivan Keiffer and Fannie Bell Hamilton Boyett. He was a retired Commissioner, he had worked at Sand and Gravel Pit for 30 Years and was also a farmer.

Amy Bobo

Amy Hollie Bobo, 48, of Guin passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2024, in the DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.
Born August 15, 1975 in Jasper,  she was the daughter of James E. Hollie and the late Debra Morris Glasgow. She spent most of her years living in Guin and Hamilton.
She is survived by daughter, Cynthia Hayes; son, Matthew Bobo; parents, James and Jackie Hollie; granddaughter, Valerie Buetow; mother-in-law, Annette Bobo; sister, April Hollie; and brother, James David Hollie.

Bill “Wee-Willie” Betts

Mr. Robert William Betts, better known as Bill or “Wee-Willie”, 82, of Winfield passed away on Sunday, Mar. 24, 2024, in the Northwest Medical Center in Winfield. Mr. Betts was born in Trenton, N.J. on June 21, 1941 to Cortland and Adelaide Schwerd Betts. He lived in many places during his life, starting out in New Jersey to New York to Florida, then to California, Arizona, Virginia, and finally to Alabama where he lived out the remainder of his life.  Mr. Betts attended East Winfield Church of Christ and was a United States Marine Veteran.

Rocky Ridings

Rocky Edward Ridings, 69, of Hamilton passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Hamilton.
He was born in Russellville, Ala. on July 13, 1954, to Tranon (Jack) Ridings and Eugenia Glenn Ridings.  
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of almost 51 years, Sandra Cochran Ridings; children, Misty Ridings Baldwin (husband, Joseph) and Heather Ridings Haney; grandson, Spencer Ryan Haney; and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Eugenia Ridings, and sister, Kay Frederick.

Melissa Millwood

Miss Melissa Jane Millwood, 60, of Brilliant passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024, in Jasper. Melissa was born May 1, 1963 in Winfield to Curtis and Opal Pennington Millwood. Melissa attended Brilliant Church of Christ. She was a 1981 graduate of Carbon Hill High School and attended Brewer Community College from 1982 until 1984. Melissa was employed in the textile industry for 12 years, a caregiver for 20 years, and most recently as a kitchen aide for the Winfield Senior Center Program.

Janet Crow

Miss Janet Lynn Crow, 65, of Guin passed away on Sunday, Mar. 31, 2024, in the DCH Medical Center of Tuscaloosa. Janet was born Aug. 22, 1958, in Guin to Roy Floyd and Shirley Jones Crow. She was a faithful member of Bethlehem Freewill Baptist Church. Janet loved the Lord, her church, and her church family. She was often asked to pray for individuals and saw many of those prayers answered. Janet was an avid fan of Elvis often playing his music and singing along with him.

Grace Haynes

Sara Grace Haynes, 95, of Guin passed away Wednesday, Mar. 27, 2024, in the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Guin.
Grace was born April 20, 1928 in Guin to Roy and Anne Flurry Webb. She had lived in Guin all of her life and was a member of the Guin First Baptist Church. She was a Nurse and retired after 31 years working for the  Guin Hospital.

Edna Johnson

Mrs. Edna Faye Johnson, 80, of Winfield passed away on Monday, Mar. 25, 2024, in the Northwest Medical Center. Faye was born in Cullman, Ala. on Aug. 24, 1943 to Albert and Beulah Coker Swann. She attended Mortimer Jordan High School and was employed with the Winfield Cotton Mill for many years. In her spare time Faye enjoyed fishing, playing cards, working jigsaw puzzles, watching Auburn football, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Herbert Holcomb

Herbert Wayne Holcomb, 79, of Hackleburg and Morris, Ala., passed away Mar. 5, 2024.
A friend to all who crossed his path, Wayne was a kind and compassionate person with a heart of gold. Eternally positive and a lover of plants and nature, and with a natural talent in the kitchen. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends as much as possible. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Cynthia Davis-Holcomb, and his greatest joy was spending time with her.

Born April 8, 1955 in Guin, he was the son of the late Purvy and Autie Green Barnes.  He had lived in Guin most of his life and was a roofer and carpenter.
He is survived by daughter, April Brown; sister, Faye Hunsinger; brothers, Clayton and Roy Barnes; and 6 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Walter, Wyman, Clinton and Eugene Barnes.

Rita Hall

Mrs. Rita Jo Hall, 74, of Winfield passed away on Friday, Mar. 8, 2024 in the Fayette Long Term Care Facility. Mrs. Hall was born on April 8, 1949 to A.J. and LaVerne Erwin Mobley. She spent much of her life as a machinist for Hyster-Yake Group in Sulligent. Rita was a very artistic person. She enjoyed painting, sewing, crocheting, and dancing. Rita was also known for being a hard worker and for her dry sense of humor. Her greatest love in life was spending time with her family.

Frank Hollingsworth

The family of Frank Morrison Hollingsworth of Decatur, Ala. is saddened to announce his passing on Mar. 6, 2024 at the age of 85 years. He passed away at Huntsville Hospital surrounded by his family and friends.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 28 years, Sandra; children, Colette Burnett, Tracie Burnett, and Cara Shumaker (Keith); Grandchildren; Great-Grandchildren; brother, Sam (Charlotte) Hollingsworth; Sister, Jeanine (Dick) Huddle as well as numerous relatives and friends.

Mrs. Jean Joyce Mann, 94, of Winfield passed away on Friday, Mar. 8, 2024 in the Sunset Manor Nursing Facility. Mrs. Mann was born Jan. 24, 1930 in Winfield to Marvin Cary and Vera Pearl Bostick Gann. She was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church and a graduate of Winfield City High School. Jean was employed for much of her life as a dental assistant before her retirement. She was born and raised in Winfield before moving to Nashville for several years. Jean returned to Winfield in 1989 where she lived the remainder of her life.

Clara Nelson

Clara Faye Nelson, 82, of Guin passed away Sunday, Mar. 3, 2024 in the Northwest Medical Center in Winfield.
Born Feb. 28, 1942 in Hamilton, she was the daughter of the late Arthur "Jack" and Minnie Hughes Martin and the Wife of Arthur Wayne Nelson.  She lived in Guin most of her life, was a member of the Grace Church, and was Manager of the Munsingwear Outlet in Guin for many years.  She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, traveling and her family.

Bill Smith

William E. "Bill" Smith, 82, of Guin passed away Friday, Mar. 8, 2024 at his residence.  Bill was born Mar. 2, 1942 in Fayette to Jesse Lee Smith and Mary Maurine Edwards Smith.
Bill was a member of the Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church and had retired from the United Parcel Service.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Lee Smith and Mary Maurine Edwards Smith; brother, Bob Smith; and sisters, Larue Batagillia and Mary Collins.

Cynthia Lynn

Cynthia Ann Moore Lynn, 65, of Brilliant passed away on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024 at her residence. Mrs. Lynn was born on April 8, 1958 in Winfield to Walter Jackson and Mary Ann Garrison Moore. She was a lifelong resident of Brilliant where she attended school and worked various area jobs before becoming disabled. In her spare time, Cynthia enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Margaret Smothers

Mrs. Margaret Marie Smothers, 87, of Winfield passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024 in the Sunset Manor Nursing Facility. Mrs. Smothers was born in Montevallo, Ala. on February 14, 1937 to Charlie and Bernice Milling Sellers. Margaret spent much of her life working in finance and retail sales.
Mrs. Smothers is survived by sons, Raymond and Richard McWhirter; stepchildren, Johnny Smothers (Tina), Jim Smothers, Billy Smothers (Donna), and Faye Daniels (Clyde); grandson, Jessie Smothers; and a host of other family members and friends.

Barbara Taylor

Barbara Ann Taylor, 81, of Hamilton, passed away Feb. 21, 2024 at the Marion Regional Nursing Home. She was born on Oct. 23, 1942 in Hamilton to the late Lowell "Coot" and Cola Gann Nix.
Survivors include children, Felicia (Lexie) Aycock, Karen (Chris) Underwood, and Charles “Boz” Greg (Alicynn) Taylor; grandchildren, Whitney (Seth) Wilkinson, Jenna Bell, Blake Underwood, Brayden Underwood, and Annalise Taylor; great-grandchildren, Adilyn and Austyn Wilkinson, Jase Pate, Nona Bell and Cora Bell; sister, Judy Cooley.

Ronnie Lott Jr.

Mr. Ronnie Lott Jr., 44, of Winfield passed away on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024 at his residence. Ronnie was born Jan. 26, 1980 in Hollywood, Fla. to Ronnie Sr. and Susan Barachkov Lott. He attended Winfield City High School. Ronnie spent much of his life working as a carpenter on many area construction projects.  In his spare time, Ronnie enjoyed fishing, watching Alabama Football, woodworking, and spending time with his son Ryan, family, and friends.

Carolyn Hubbert

Mrs. Carolyn Reese Hubbert,  81, of the Hubbertville Community passed away on Monday, Feb. 19, 2024 in the Princeton Baptist Hospital in Birmingham. Mrs. Hubbert was born Sept. 11, 1942 to Albert and Earlis Osborn Reese. She was a member of the Hubbertville Church of Christ and a 1960 graduate of Winfield High School. Along with her husband Carloyn was owner and operator of Hubbert’s Grocery and Gas in Hubbertville for many years.

James Douglas “J.D.” Hawkins passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 23, 2024 at his residence in Guin. He was born in Amory, Miss. to the late Clytee “Yank” Hawkins and Mary Sue Cantrell Hawkins.

Dr. Bill Garrison Jr.

Dr. William (Bill) Cecil Garrison Jr. of Calera, Ala, passed away on Feb. 24, 2024. He was born in San Diego, Calif. on Aug. 09, 1944. Bill graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He also graduated from Samford University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. He was married to Deborah Annette Watson on June 7, 1975. Bill worked as a pharmacist for UAB Medical West (formally known as Bessemer Carraway). He also owned Crossroads Discount Pharmacy and Garrison Drugs in Montevallo, Ala.
