CHEROKEE — The Phillips Bears went on a long road trip to Cherokee High School Friday, Oct. 4, a trip that appeared at first as if it would be a highly successful one. However, a tough fourth quarter made the trip home even harder, as the Bears lost 34-19.
The Bears got on the board quickly in the first quarter, as did the Indians, but the Bears had a slight 7-6 lead at the end of the first.
The home team scored again early in the second quarter and went for two, taking a 14-7 lead, but the Bears roared back with one minute to go before the half, going into the locker rooms down one point to Cherokee, 14-13.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Indians scored on a pass play in the fourth to make it 20-13 after the two-point try failed. The Bears answered quickly, running the kick-off all the way back for a touchdown. The two-point try failed, and Cherokee had a slim one-point lead with six minutes to go in the game.
The Indians scored twice more in the remaining minutes to take the 34-19 victory.
The Bears will be at home this Friday night, Oct. 11, hosting one of their arch rivals, Hackleburg. The Panthers are undefeated on the season and hold the winning record in the 80-game history of playing Phillips, winning 56 of the 80 meetings.
