Weather happens whether you are prepared for it or not. But to aid Alabamians in obtaining some of the items needed to prepare for and get through tough weather situations, the state will hold its 14th Annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday next weekend.
Sales tax exempt items can be purchased beginning on Friday, Feb. 21, at 12:01 a.m. through Sunday, Feb. 23, at midnight.
Besides saving on state taxes, most of the municipalities and counties in the state also participate, allowing the savings to add up on multiple small purchases and even larger needed items.
Portable generators and power cords costing $1,000 or less may be purchased during the special weekend.
Eligible items costing $60 or less (per item) include batteries, phone chargers, weather radios, flashlights, tarpaulins, plastic sheeting, plastic drop cloths, plywood, non-electric food and water storage containers, duct tape, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, fuel tanks and more.
A complete list of eligible items can be found by searching for “Alabama Severe Weather Sales Tax Holiday Fact Sheet” or visiting revenue.alabama.gov. For more information, you may also call the state’s sales and use tax division at 334-242-1490 during office hours.
