HAMILTON - In October 1978, Hamilton became the home to a young, rising journalist, eager to sink his pen and ink into the newspaper business.
James Lesley Walters, longtime editor for the Journal Record, moved to Marion County that year on a business venture with The Itawamba County Times of Fulton, Miss., where a new Hamilton newspaper would be launching, The Hamilton Progress.
Now, an entire 41 years later, Walters has announced he is handing off his red-inked editor’s pen and will be retiring from his current role at the newspaper, effective Friday, Nov. 1.
“It has been my deepest pleasure to have served this county in this capacity for so many years,” Walters said. “Telling Marion County’s story week to week has been the journey of a lifetime—the friends, brothers and sisters I’ve found along the way have been even better.
