HOLLY POND- The Winfield Pirates continued their path toward a Class 3A, Region 6 championship with a dominating 46-0 victory over the Holly Pond Broncos on Friday, Oct. 8, at Holly Pond.
The win improved Winfield to 8-0 on the season and 5-0 in Class 3A, Region 6.
The Pirates defense through eight games is only giving up 5.4 points a game, while the offense is rolling up 41.5 points per game.
Winfield jumped on the Holly Pond early and never let up, running out to a 33-0 halftime lead and cruised to the 46-0 final.
“It was a good win and I'm tickled to death for the win,” said Winfield head coach David McKinney in an interview following the game. “Our defense played well and we had a lot of young guys that got to play a lot tonight and that's good going forward into next year.”
“We just have to keep working and get better on ourselves, and we had four starters out tonight,” McKinney said.
“It was a very big region win, and we are trying to get healthy and get ready for Pennington next week.”
Winfield began the night kicking off, but in a bit of confusion the Holly Pond return men never picked up or covered the football as the Pirates’ Phoenix Sandlin fell on the loose ball giving possession to Winfield at the Holly Pond 18-yard line.
Joseph Cox started the drive with a 17-yard run to the Broncos two-yard line and later punched in the opening drive with a one-yard scoring run.
The extra point attempt by Brooks Smith was no good, but Winfield grabbed the early lead at 6-0 with 11:15 left in the first quarter.
After holding the Broncos on the ensuing drive and forcing a punt, the Pirates took over at its own 18-yard line.
Aidan Quinn passed to Davis Bowen for a quick three yards, and then Quinn Found a wide open Seth Kemble down the middle of the field for a 79 yard touchdown pass.
The two point conversion run by Cox was good and Winfield’s lead grew to 14-0 with 6:31 left in the first quarter.
Winfield’s defense withstood a early long run on the ensuing drive by the Broncos, and then anchored down to hold on and force a punt.
The Pirates next drive began at its own 36 and they drove 64 yards in 10 plays as Cox finished off the drive with a nine-yard touchdown run.
Smith’s extra point was good and the lead grew to 21-0 with 11L18 left in the second quarter.
The Pirates defense again held the Broncos on their next drive and forced another punt, but this time Winfield’s Jordan Mastin scooped up the punt at the Broncos’ 40-yard line and ran behind a wall to his right and walked into the end zone for a punt return touchdown.
Smith’s extra point attempt missed its mark, but the Pirates lead grew to 27-0 with 9:02 left in the second quarter.
The Broncos next drive saw them move the ball all the way to the Winfield nine-yard line before Seth Kemble intercepted a pass in the end zone for a touchback.
Winfield took over at their own 20-yard line and Quinn threw a pass to the right to Rain Nolan and he fought his way for 13 yards and another first down.
On the next play, Quinn passed to Bowen over the middle and he made a defender miss and raced 67 yards into the end zone for another Pirates touchdown.
Smith’s point after attempt was no good, but the lead grew to 33-0 with 2:50 left in the second quarter.
In the second half Winfield added to their lead as Keylan Hughes finished off a six play 65-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown run.
Smith added the extra point to give Winfield a 40-0 lead with 8:00 left in the third quarter.
The Broncos next drive ended as Winfield’s Walt Hennicke intercepted a pass and setup the PIrates with the ball again at their own 10-yard line.
Braxton Tilley finished off a seven play, 90 yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, and smith’s extra point was no good, but he extended the lead extended to 46-0 with 7:14 left in the game.
The Pirates defense held the Broncos one last time as time expired in the game to give the Pirates the victory.
Winfield finished the game with 399 total yards, with 242 passing and 157 rushing.
Quinn completed 8-of-12 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns.
Smith completed 1-of-2 passes for 27 yards.
Hughes led the rushing attack with four carries for 74 yards and a touchdown. Cox ran seven times for 37 yards and two touchdowns. Brady May ran three times for 23 yards. Tilley ran three times for 14 yards and a touchdown. Quinn ran twice for 12 yards.
Kemble led the receivers with one catch for 79 yards and a touchdown. Bowen grabbed two receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown. Nolan caught three passes for 55 yards. Mastin reeled in two passes for 31 yards. Andrew Wallace caught one ball for seven yards.
Winfield (8-0, 5-0 Class 3A, Region 6) will host J.B. Pennington (5-2, 4-1 Class 3A, Region 6) on Friday, Oct. 15, at Estes Hudson Stadium in a Class 3A, Region 6 contest.
