Former councilwoman passes away

WINFIELD — Gloria Stovall, who served on the Winfield City Council for 12 years as the second woman to hold the position, passed away at home on Sunday, April 7, 2024.
Stovall, who was 79, grew up in Winfield. She was born in 1944 to her parents Brody and Addine Rose. They were members of Winfield Church of Christ.
Stovall graduated from Winfield City High School in 1963 and went on to work various jobs over the years, including working as a dental assistant, working as a kindergarten teacher’s aide at Winfield Elementary School, working for the Marion County Board of Registrars and working for Stovall Contractors, which her family owned.
She would end up retiring from Stovall Contractors. She was also involved in Marion County Community Actions and the Northwest Alabama Kidney Foundation.
Stovall was also a member of the Modern Culture Club and the Cosmopolitan Club.
Stovall’s sister, Barbara Ivey, shared a few words about her sister.
“With there being only 18 months difference in our ages, Gloria was the older sister and I became the tag along, so yes in our younger life we were very close,” Ivey said. “We shared the same group of friends, and this carried over to our adult years when we had the same group and also some who were older…
