Ida Joann (Pennington) Hall, affectionally known as Joann, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. She was born July 5, 1934, in Sulligent, Ala., the 9th of 10 children born to the late Eddie and Ramah Pennington. She received her education in the Alabama school system and was a graduate of Lamar County High School.
Joann relocated to Chicago, Ill., where she married her late husband Oliver James Hall. They were blessed with four children, Reginald (Joyce) of Winfield, Jerold of Guin, Carla (Ron Polk) of Lucas, Texas, and Joel (Rene) of Lynwood, Ill., and grandchildren, Cory, Jarrett, Joi, Mario, Diane, Eldridge and Devoir, along with a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
She is survived by her sister, Louverne Terrell of Colorado Springs, Colo., and her brother-in-law, Charles Jones Sr., of Virginia Beach, Va.
Joann was preceded in death by her brother Richard Pennington and sisters, Audrey Loftis, Marjorie Bratton, Mineola Driver, Martha Jones, Annie Nolan, Ruby Rosser and Shirley Jones.
After O.J. retired, they moved back to Alabama in 1984, where they enjoyed the serenity of retirement life. Joann was a faithful member of the Church of Christ, attending in Chicago, Guin and then Fayette, Ala., as long as her health allowed.
Caring for her family was so very important to her. She enjoyed spending time with her sisters and brother along with her many nieces and nephews. Joann is remembered for her delicious cooking and the desire to feed everyone who came to her home. Her love of children was felt by not only her family but her neighbors, friends and children she cared for during her life. Children gravitated to her genuine love and caregiving which carried on to their adult lives.
She treasured spending time with family at reunions, visits and especially with her sisters over a cup of coffee or a long distant phone call. Everyone enjoyed her great sense of humor and ability to bring joy and fun to our family events. She will be missed by all.
The family will have visitation on Friday, Aug. 16, at 6 p.m. at Otts Funeral Home in Sulligent. Funeral services will be Aug. 17 at 11 a.m., also at Otts Funeral Home.
