GUIN — The Winfield City High School Lady Pirates varsity volleyball team won the Marion County Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 12.
The tournament began on Thursday, Oct. 10, with the opening round and the first round of the winners’ bracket.
Thursday saw the Hamilton Lady Aggies face off against the Brilliant Lady Tigers, and the Hackleburg Lady Panthers face off against the Winfield Lady Pirates.
Hackleburg and Winfield played the first game, which the Lady Pirates won 2-0 to advance to play the Lady Red Raiders in the next round.
Later on Thursday, Hamilton played Brilliant. The first set was fairly close, with the Lady Aggies winning 25-19.
The second set was less close, and the Lady Aggies won the set 25-10 to win the match 2-0 and play Phillips in the next round.
The Lady Pirates won their first set against the Lady Red Raiders, but Marion County came back to win the second set 25-23. In the third set, the Lady Pirates broke the tie 15-9 to win the match 2-1.
The other winners’ bracket game on Thursday was between the Phillips She Bears and the Hamilton Lady Aggies.
The Lady Aggies won both sets by a decent margin (25-8 and 25-12) to secure their spot against the Lady Pirates in the third round of the winners’ bracket.
The losers’ bracket games began on Saturday morning.
Marion County won two games to face the loser of the Winfield-Hamilton game.
The Lady Aggies lost to the Lady Pirates, but they defeated Marion County to set up a rematch against Winfield for the final game.
The Lady Pirates would go on the win the final match, and claim the title of the 2024 Marion County Volleyball Tournament champions.
Winfield and Marion County hosted their respective area tournaments the following week, which the Journal Record will cover in an upcoming issue.
The Lady Pirates, Lady Red Raiders, Lady Tigers and Lady Aggies will all be advancing to the regional tournament, which will begin today.
