BEAR CREEK — Phillips Bears fans had a thriller of a homecoming, not knowing if their team was going to be able to pull it out until the final minutes of the game, when Brandon Ricketts found the end zone to give the Bears a 14-6 victory over regional foe Waterloo.
After a defensive struggle for most of the first half, the Cougars struck paydirt, with Preston Morris doing the honors.  The two-point try was no good, and Waterloo was ahead 6-0 going into the locker rooms.
The third quarter was also a draw, but the Bears were able to tie the game early in the fourth on a touchdown, courtesy of Chase Burton. The PAT was no good, and the score was tied at 6.
It appeared the game would be going into overtime, as both Phillips and Waterloo utilized the pass to keep stopping the clock, but coming up incomplete each time.  Ricketts scored in the waning minutes of regulation, and the two-point try was good to give the Bears the 14-6 victory.
The Bears are now 2-5 in regional play and 2-6 overall, which means they will not make the playoffs this year. They will be on the road this Friday night, at Addison, for their final regional game of the season.
