McKinney is 3A Coach of the Year

WINFIELD — The Winfield City Schools Board of Education recognized head football coach David McKinney who was awarded as the 3A Coach of the Year during its regular meeting on Tuesday, April 8.
McKinney was named as the 3A Coach of the Year by the Alabama Football Coaches Association last December.
“It’s a great honor,” McKinney said. “I’m very flattered. To me, this is big because it’s voted on by your peers. I didn’t have a clue until I got the call. It’s a great honor of the coaches around me and the players and the price they pay, so it’s not just me. I may get the honor, but it takes everybody to do it. I’m flattered and tickled to death at the same time, and I’m ready to start working on next year.”
Superintendent Randy Thomley spoke highly of McKinney during the meeting for his contributions to the school and his players both on and off the field.
During that meeting, the board also approved several retirements and resignations. Tammy McDonald retired as CNP (Child Nutrition Program) manager.
Jimmy Harrison resigned as a bus driver. Tammy Box, Melissa Smith and Deborah Hankins retired as teachers, and Chelsea O’Dell resigned due to relocation of her husband’s job.
Dennis Seals was hired as a bus driver.
In other business:
• The board approved out of state travel over the summer for athletics and other extracurriculars;
• The board voted to participate in the school sales tax holiday from July 18-20;
• The board approved a four-day work week for 12-month staff from the week of June 9 through the week of July 14;
• The board voted to accept a $423,000 bid from Johns and Kirskey, Inc. for reroofing on the Career Tech and Board of Education building, which will be paid out of Lt. Governor’s Grant Funds;

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 13, at noon, but is subject to change based on baseball and softball playoff schedules if any Winfield teams advance that far.
