Pirates pick up one and lose one

A big day on the mound and at the plate by Brodie Moody helped lead the Hamilton Aggies to a 8-2 victory over the visiting Winfield Pirates Tuesday, March 14.
Hamilton got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning. After a single by Coley Gilstrap and a walk to Dalton Davis put two runners on base, a Winfield error resulted in both runners coming around to score.
The Pirates got one of those runs back in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Jace Hollingsworth. Kruz Box scored the run after coming in to pinch run for J.D. Ray who led off the inning with a single.
The bottom of the sixth would prove to be the big inning for the Aggies as 10 batters would come to the plate with six of them coming around to score. The big blow was a Moody grand slam following three walks and a hit batter.
The Pirates managed to push one more run across on a RBI single by Hollingsworth in the top of the seventh scoring Declyn Morgan resulting in the 8-2 final score.
The Winfield Pirates improved to 8-6 on the season by winning a back and forth contest against the Lamar County Bulldogs on Saturday, March 18.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the third, Winfield would tie it up in the bottom half inning on a Hollingsworth lead off double (Box would come in to pinch run) that would come around to score on a passed ball.
The Bulldogs would retake the lead with two runs in the fourth, but it would be short lived as the Pirates came storming back in the bottom of the fifth. Consecutive hits by Ray, Brayden McCaleb and Brady May were followed by a walk to Walt Hennicke. Another pair of hits by Jarrett Hosch and Kyson Key along with walks to Morgan and Senior Tyler Mays resulted in five runs crossing the plate in the inning.
The stubborn Bulldogs refused to go away adding two runs in the top of the sixth to close the gap to one run, at 6-5. The Pirates would answer with another run in the bottom of the sixth after a Ray lead off double came around to score on a single by May.
Down 7-5, the Bulldogs would tie it up in the seventh, setting the stage for the bottom half of the inning.
Mays led off the inning with a single. After advancing to second on a fielder’s choice, a Spencer Haney single would put runners on first and third with one out. A ground ball, fielder’s choice, by Hollingsworth would score Mays with the winning run resulting in the 8-7 walk off win.
Haney picked up the win in relief.
