Miles Miles
WINFIELD — Miles Miles was elected to Winfield city council’s place #3 on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at just 19 years old.
Miles won with 517 votes over incumbent Keith “Termite” Pollard with 244 votes and Jordan Pasley with 54 votes.
graduated in May of this year, has owned and operated Miles Lawncare and Landscaping since 2014, and he also owns Miles Cycles (a motorcycle and small engine repair shop) with his father.
Miles said he was honored to be granted the responsibility and hopes he can use his position to benefit the city and bring fresh perspective.
“I was excited and surprised that I won,” he said. “It’s crazy to me that the people of Winfield are giving me this responsibility at 19 to make a difference on the city council, and I’m really excited about it.
“I’m hoping to do the very best I can and make some good changes in office to help as many people as I can. I like helping people, and that’s what I want to do.”
Miles said he was inspired to run for the city council position out of his love for his hometown.
“I plan on living here the rest of my life, and I just want to see my city grow as I get older,” he said. “I’ve grown up here, and I love this town. I’ve always loved Winfield, and I just want to give back to the community as much as I can. I think me being young can really help out the city and give a fresh mind to the things going on here.”
Miles said he is looking to help grow the city and its economy by continuing to grow around the interstate.
“Obviously, I want to pave roads and get that sort of stuff done as best as I can in my four years,” he said. “But I want to help grow around the interstate. That’s where the growth is headed for our city, and I think growing up around the interstate will bring in a lot of tax dollars and help with our economic growth. That’s my goal for now, along with addressing other needs as they come up.”
Miles said he understands his age might be a concern to some, but that all leaders have to start somewhere.
“I know a lot of people are probably concerned with my age, but anyone who ever ran for political office had to run for the first time at one point or another,” he said. “For me, it just so happened to be at 19.
“I want to thank all of my supporters for voting for me, and everyone else in the city who supported me.”
Miles’s term will begin this November.
