Congratulations to Freedom FIBER: Mission Accomplished!

Around 2015, Tombigbee Electric Cooperative was researching and doing feasibility studies on the idea of bringing fiber internet to its electric co-op customers.
In 2017, the board committed to the project with the mission of “providing internet access to everyone, not leaving anyone behind,” no matter if the customer lived in a more rural area.
Their goal mirrored the original cooperative push of bringing electrical services to outlying, rural areas, but this time, with fiber optic cables and internet service.
Once Freedom FIBER started building throughout Marion County and Lamar County, other local, county and state officials requested the company consider serving additional areas. So, they did.
Now, nine years later, as we reach October of 2025, Freedom FIBER cables have been run 4,200 miles and services include the counties of Marion, Lamar, Fayette and Franklin, as well as areas in Winston County west of Smith Lake which are not covered by other services.
Congratulations and Mission Accomplished! We salute Tombigbee Electric Cooperative and its subsidiary, Tombigbee Communications, in celebrating the milestone of bringing Freedom FIBER high-speed fiber internet access to more than 100,000 people in Northwest Alabama.
We applaud the board, employees and subcontractors on working together to fulfill their mission and their commitment. And we are grateful beyond words to Tombigbee Electric Cooperative for their investment of more than $100 million dollars in the Freedom FIBER initiative over the last nine years.
Although there were some state and federal funds provided, Tombigbee Electric Cooperative has made the most significant and costly investment in Freedom FIBER. We certainly cannot think of another company in our area which has invested more than $100 million in this community and region.
We are proud to be a part of the communities served by the largest co-op internet service provider in the entire State of Alabama. Job well done, Tombigbee!
