HAMILTON — Freedom FIBER is now celebrating the completion of its commitment to bring reliable, high-speed fiber internet access to more than 100,000 residents in Northwest Alabama.
As part of Tombigbee Communications, a subsidiary of Tombigbee Electric Cooperative, the dream of Freedom FIBER, which began in 2017, has come to fruition in 2025.
With more than 4,200 miles of fiber, a more than $100 million investment from Tombigbee and more than 27,000 subscribers, with additional residences, businesses and industries signing up every single day, the company is now marking this milestone and their amazing investment in the region.
The Journal-Record sat down with Tombigbee President and CEO Britton Lightsey recently to find out more about Freedom FIBER’s beginnings and the work done during the last nine years to fulfill its mission.
Lightsey joined Tombigbee in 2022, and took over as CEO in 2023. He noted there were numerous conversations from all sides prior to the project, with other entities expressing no desire to “take the internet to everyone.”
