Lee R. Hamm

Lee R. Hamm

Lee R. Hamm passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, Feb. 24, 2025. Born on Oct. 17, 1929, in Tishomingo County, Miss., he was the son of Joseph Clettie and Vera Almedia Russell Hamm. Lee grew up on his family’s farm near Bloody Springs, Miss., and graduated from Belmont High School in 1948. He later graduated from the newly established Northeast Mississippi Community College and became a teacher at Banner School.
In 1950, Lee married Etta Ruth Parker, and their marriage lasted 69 wonderful years. Early in their marriage, they moved to the northern suburbs of Chicago, Ill., seeking work and better opportunities. There they raised their two sons and worshipped with the Zion Church of Christ. In 1968, they returned to Hamilton, making it their lifelong home. Lee and Ruth were devoted Christians and active members of the West Hamilton Church of Christ, where Lee served as church treasurer and taught Bible classes for many years.
Lee was well-known in the community as the owner and operator of Hamm Auto Sales in Weston. An avid gardener, he took great pleasure working the land, sharing generously with family, neighbors and friends. Having grown up during the Great Depression, Lee learned the values of hard work, modest living and compassion, particularly towards those enduring hardship. His life exemplified a profound love for God and genuine care for his neighbor.
He is survived by his grandson, Joseph Hamm and wife Fiona, of Hamilton; eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Telford Hamm and wife Alice, of Red Bay; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Lee was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth; his sons, Ken Hamm and Roy Hamm; and siblings, Clyce Hamm, Clovis Durall Hamm, Vincent Hamm and Maedean Allen.
A graveside service for family and friends was held at Smyrna Cemetery in Hamilton.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Smyrna Cemetery maintenance fund.
