Steele signs to play pro basketball in Bosnia

Kenton Steele, a 2021 graduate of Hamilton High School, is playing pro basketball in Bosnia. He is shown here playing while at West Point.

HAMILTON — SARAJEVO, BOSNIA — Kenton Steele, 23, of Hamilton, signed with a professional overseas basketball team in Bosnia beginning this season.
Steele signed with OKK Slavija, a team based in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Steele said he actually got a late start to playing basketball, which would become a running theme through his career.
“I didn’t get to play varsity basketball until 11th grade, so I was a late bloomer,” he said. “I’ve been a late bloomer my entire career.”
Steele was an all-state honorable mention his senior year, and went on to attend Bevill his freshman year.
He said he had a rough freshman year and didn’t get to play much, which made him question if he wanted to continue playing basketball. But he received an offer that made him reconsider.
“One school that kind of recruited me a little bit in high school was Point University (in West Point, Ga.),” he said. “They reached out to me after my first year and asked if I was still interested. I ended up going there for my sophomore year. Again, there was still that kind of COVID effect, so there were a lot of older guys, and now I’m going to a four-year university and hadn’t really proven myself up until that point. I didn’t really have any accolades by my name or anything.
