HAYDEN - The Winfield Pirates were all set to take on the Carbon Hill Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 23, but due to Covid-19 the Bulldogs had to forfeit the game to Winfield giving the Pirates their ninth win on the season and a perfect 7-0 in Class 3A, Region 6.
Winfield was able to pick up a replacement game with the Hayden Wildcats, that would not count on either teams' record, but would give both teams one extra tune-up game before the playoffs begin on Nov. 6. The Class 5A Wildcats jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Pirates fought back, and eventually pulled within one.
Later, the Pirates fumbled on a possible game tying score with less than a minute to play and fell to Hayden 35-27.
Hayden received the opening kickoff and on their first play from scrimmage Winfield's Seth Kemble was able to intercept a pass to get a turnover for the Pirates to set them up at their own 26.
