Lady Pirates, Lady Panthers win WAC, NAC

WINFIELD — The Winfield Lady Pirates won the West Alabama Conference Championship on Saturday, April 22.
The Lady Pirates shut out the Lamar County Lady Bulldogs 8-0 and went home early that night after the fifth inning.
The Lady Pirates played a solid defensive game, allowing zero runs from the Bulldogs. Pitcher Kennah Beth Lacy only allowed four hits and threw three strikeouts.
The Pirates scored their first run in the bottom of the second on an RBI by Lexie May.
In the bottom of the third, Winfield’s Kaylee Parr hit a home run to earn two more runs for the Lady Pirates.
The Lady Pirates scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI double from Maddie Grace Lewis.
They scored three final runs off of a hit by Kennah Beth Lacy and another hit by Willa Simmons in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The game was called at the end of the bottom of the fifth inning, and the Lady Pirates were declared WAC champions.
Winfield scored those eight runs on five hits, led by Lacy and Parr.
Winfield began the WAC tournament with a weather-delayed 10-1 win over the Sulligent Blue Devils on Saturday morning.
The Lady Pirates recorded 11 hits during the game, with multiple hits from Simmons, Lacy, May and Molly Kate Elkins.
On defense, the Lady Pirates made zero errors, and Lacy pitched five innings during which she allowed one run on three hits and threw five strikeouts.
Later on Saturday, the Lady Pirates soundly defeated the South Lamar Lady Stallions 8-1.
The Lady Pirates scored five runs in the sixth inning thanks to singles from Lewis and Lacy, as well as a walk from Hanna Kimbrell and a defensive error on a hit from Elkins.
That was after Lacy kicked things off in the first inning with a hit on a 3-1 count to score the first run of the game.
Simmons pitched this game, only surrendering one run out of five hits, and throwing one strikeout and one walk.
The Lady Pirates racked up 13 hits in this game, with multiple hits from Kimbrell, Ivey Sims, Lacy and May. Kimbrell had the most hits with three.
That win advanced them to the final game, in which they defeated the Lady Bulldogs 8-0.
The Lady Pirates advanced to the 3A Area 12 tournament, where they took on the Colbert Height Wildcats on Tuesday night, May 2, at home.

The Hackleburg High School Lady Panthers won the North Alabama Conference tournament on Saturday night, April 22.
In the final game of the tournament, the game ended early as the Lady Panthers destroyed the Hubbertville Lady Lions 19-2.
The Lady Panthers had an explosive first inning, putting up 14 runs before the Lady Lions could get three outs.
The Lady Panthers mastered the art of stealing bases, which combined with several walks, hits and defensive errors, allowed them to score so many runs so quickly.
The Lady Lions scored one run in the bottom of the first inning, but a strikeout ended their hopes of more runs in that inning.
Hackleburg scored their final runs of the game in the top of the second inning, adding five more to their total.
Hackleburg gave up one more run in the bottom of the third, which would be the final inning of the game. The Lady Lions were able to bat in one more run, before a final hit was caught, and the game came to an early end.
Hackleburg’s Braylynn Pope, Ellie Nichols, Laine Steward and Madison Browning each scored three runs. Saylor Cooper and Carson Browning each scored two runs, and one of those runs for Cooper was a home run. Payten Herron, Heidi Hudson and Kaylee Ables scored one run each.
Steward hit four RBIs and two doubles. Herron, Pope and Ables also hit doubles during the game.
Herron pitched for two innings, giving up three hits and one run, while also throwing two strikeouts. Nichols pitched for one inning, allowing two hits and another run.
Hackleburg started off the tournament with a game against Lynn, who the Lady Panthers shut down 13-0 on Saturday morning.
In that game, the Lady Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, five in the second, four in the third and two more in the fourth, then the game ended.
Pope scored the most runs with three off of two hits.
Cooper, Carson and Hannah Johnson each scored two runs, and Raegan Pharr, Nichols, Ables and Madelyn Burt scored one ach.
Steward pitched for three innings, allowing no hits or runs and throwing four strikeouts.
Pope pitched for one inning, only allowing one hit and nothing else while throwing one strikeout.
Hackleburg advanced to take on the Marion County Lady Red Raiders, who had just defeated Berry 13-0.
The Lady Panthers won that game 6-1, scoring three runs in the top of the first, and another three in the second inning. Marion County only scored one run in the bottom of the second inning, scored by Anna Rhea White.
Pope and Cooper scored two points each, and the other two points came from Nichols and Ables.
Herron hit three RBIs, and Cooper had two of her own.
Steward pitched for all four innings, allowing one run off of one hit and throwing four strikeouts.
Marion County’s Ava Butler pitched for three innings, allowing no runs off of three hits and throwing one strikeout. Keleigh Stiles threw for one inning, allowing five runs off of four hits and throwing two strikeouts.
Hubbertville defeated the Brilliant Lady Tigers 18-5 in their first game, and advanced to take on the Lady Panthers.
Their first matchup was much closer, with Hackleburg winning 7-5.
Pope and Herron scored two runs each, with three more runs scored by Madison, Hudson and Ables.
Steward pitched all five innings of the game, allowing five runs off of six hits and throwing 12 strikeouts.
After that defeat, the Lady Lions took on the Lady Raiders and won a second chance to play the Lady Panthers in the final game.
But the Lady Panthers ended up crushing those hopes with their 19-2 victory in the final game to earn the title of NAC champions.
The Lady Panthers advanced to the 1A Area 13 tournament, where they played the Vina Red Devils on Monday, May 1. The Phillips Bears also played Monday against the Belgreen Bulldogs in the same tournament.
