E-911, EMA requesting citizens, businesses register storm shelters

MARION COUNTY — As part of a joint effort to increase emergency preparedness, Marion County E-911 and Marion County EMA are asking citizens and businesses to register their private storm shelters so a mapped database can be created.
This information can be extremely beneficial to first responders during severe weather emergencies, as in a worst-case scenario, persons can become trapped in their shelter by storm debris.
The information on storm shelters provided by citizens and businesses will be contained in public safety map data, allowing fast identification of possibly affected shelters.
The database will be used on an as-needed basis by first responders to check shelters after damaging severe weather.
Shelter information will only be shared with first responders and emergency management personnel.
Registering a shelter is easy! An online form can be filled out in seconds at www.marion911.net/forms or by using the QR code with this story.
For more information, contact EMA at 205-921-4555 or E-911 at 205-921-5711 between Monday and Friday during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
