George Tucker’s grave at Hopewell Cemetery is shown. Descendants will gather on Saturday, May 16, at the Glen Allen Community Center for the annual reunion.
Two hundred and eighty years ago in Amelia County, Va., a child was born to Thomas and Margaret Tucker. They named him George. He moved with his family to North Carolina and later to Wilkes County, Ga. George became a patriot and joined the Continental Army fighting in several battles in the south during the War of Independence, including the important battle of Cowpens, S.C. He was promoted to rank of lieutenant during his military career. George married Rebecca Leverett of whom all of his descendants come through. After Rebecca’s death, George and his father relocated to Jasper County, Ga, where he married Martha Nichols. Thomas Tucker died in Jasper County at the age of 105. George then migrated to Marion County, now Fayette County, Ala., in the community of Bazemore. George lived to be 106 and is buried at Hopewell Cemetery near Glen Allen, in Fayette County.
A group of George Tucker descendants 45 years ago decided to begin a reunion once a year at old Hopewell Cemetery and organized the George Tucker Patriots Descendants Association. The Tuckers will meet for their annual reunion on Saturday, May 16, at the Glen Allen Community Center. The address for the community center is 42 Birch Street, Winfield, but it is not in Winfield.
Directions: turn in front of the Glen Allen Post Office on Highway 129 South, cross the railroad tracks and immediately turn left onto County Road 73, before the old gas station. Drive on 73 headed southeast, and take the first left onto Hickory Street; the community center is the next building on the left. If coming from White’s Chapel area, turn right onto Hickory Street off of County Road 73, just past the Glen Allen Church of Christ.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with the reunion starting at 10. Bring a dish or two for potluck lunch at noon. Also, everyone is encouraged to bring old family photos and genealogy to compare and share. Come and enjoy the fellowship and learn about the rich history of the Tucker family.
