BRILLIANT — A high school basketball game was momentarily halted on Tuesday, Jan. 24, when a belligerent spectator caused a scene and was subsequently taken into custody by Brilliant Chief of Police Eddie Bryant.
Stephen Smiley, of Brilliant, has been charged with public intoxication, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
“The spectator was behind the bench,” Brilliant Coach Ryan Sanderson explained. “He was using vulgar words and directly talking to players and also making gestures.” Sanderson asked Smiley to stop. The police were involved when Smiley continued to act in an inappropriate manner.
“The policeman (Bryant) asked him to leave, and he refused to leave,” Sanderson continued. When the police tried to escort Smiley out of the gymnasium, he resisted.
