MARION COUNTY
Marion County will be sending their boys and girls to the regional tournament this week after both teams won their respective 1A Area 11 championship games.
The Lady Red Raiders tamed the Hubbertville Lions 63-31, and the Raiders won 69-39 over the Lynn Bears.
Both teams will be advancing to the regional tournament this week.
HACKLEBURG
Hackleburg will also be sending both teams to the regional tournament.
The Hackleburg Panthers boys’ team advanced to the regional tournament on a nail-biter 2-point victory.
The Panthers cast out the Vina Red Devils 51-49, sending them to the regional tournament this week.
Hackleburg’s girls lost to the Belgreen Bulldogs 71-48, and will advance as the 1A Area 14 runner-up.
HAMILTON
The Hamilton Lady Aggies will be moving on to the regional tournament after winning the 4A Area 12 championship game.
The Lady Aggies defeated the Cordova Blue Devils 72-36 to continue their season.
The Hamilton boys’ season came to an end, however, after a 68-53 loss to Cordova.
WINFIELD
The Winfield Pirates won a narrow 60-58 victory over the Carbon Hill Bulldogs during the hard-fought 3A Area 10 boys’ game on Friday night, Feb. 10.
The score was close for the entire game, with the Pirates and Bulldogs staying within one or two points of each other for the majority of the game.
At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied 14-14. Both teams stayed within a point of each other until the final minute of the second quarter, when the Bulldogs pulled ahead to a 31-26 lead before heading to the locker room.
The Pirates spent the third quarter battling their way back to a 37-37 tie with 3:45 left in the third quarter, and the game was tied again at the end of the third quarter at 42, as an intense fourth quarter began.
The Pirates gained a small lead after a three-point shot from Slate Gilbert and held on for dear life until the clock ran out.
In the final minutes of the game, the Bulldogs started to close the gap, coming within one point with less than a minute to go in the game.
The Bulldogs attempted a shot with 25 seconds left, but a last second block from Sean Wyers saved the day.
The clock hit six seconds before Winfield’s Drew Cook scored twice on a free throw to give the Pirates some breathing room and insure that a last second shot would give the Bulldogs a tie at most.
The Pirates were leading 60-57, and held the Bulldogs to one point on a free throw to win the game 60-58 for the regional tournament this week.
Winfield’s varsity girls’ team lost to Gordo 58-21 in their first game of the area tournament to end their season.
