HAMILTON — The Marion County Board of Education held its August meeting on Friday, Aug. 15. The board dealt with a variety of school matters, including approving school trips and the use of school facilities, as well as personnel changes--which are listed below.
Superintendent Dr. Patrick Sutton was asked later to comment on the recent 2025 Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program results, where Marion County stood out as one of the schools with double-digit growth in ACAP math scores.
Despite being designated as a district with high poverty levels, which are noted as being connected to lower test scores, Marion County students’ test scores increased from 34 percent to 44 percent proficiency, a 10 percent rise.
Sutton contributes this outcome to the students and staff of the Marion County School System.
"Our students, teachers and administrators continue to do incredible work,” he said. “When you look at the data, our people are setting the standard of excellence, regardless of circumstance. I’m proud to be a part of this school system.”
One of the agenda items for the board was the approval of an agreement for an Encore Athletic Trainer for the school system.
Sutton explained, "For many years, Encore has provided athletic trainers at athletic events at no cost to our schools or athletes. Encore decided it could not continue this service without a cost. Our board agreed to partner with Encore to supplement their cost of trainers for one year. The safety of our student-athletes is a priority. Hopefully, we can continue this service in the future."
