EMS in Bear Creek to ‘fill that void’ in Hackleburg

Troy Murray, owner of South Eastern Ems-Fire of Guin, spoke to the Hackleburg council about providing an ambulance to Hackleburg. The company has been providing service to the Bear Creek area since Sept. 29.

HACKLEBURG — Struggling with late times on ambulance services is frustrating for officials and could mean the difference between life and death for the individual needing medical services. South Eastern Ems-Fire, based out of Guin, has been covering the Bear Creek area, keeping an ambulance stationed there 24 hours a day.
Since the service has cut down drastically on time waiting for medical services in Bear Creek, Troy Murray, the owner of South Eastern, approached the Town of Hackleburg during their council meeting on Monday, Nov. 17, about offering the service to their area as well.
“We have struggled for ambulance service here,” Hackleburg Mayor Darryl Colburn said. “It may be 30 minutes or 45 minutes (until they arrive). They are willing to rotate Bear Creek and Hackleburg.”
“Bear Creek was an area I looked at,” Murray explained about starting the business. During the meeting, he mentioned the average response time, from dispatch to the scene, averaged nine minutes.
“That’s dramatically different,” he said from the response time given by Colburn.
