Hamilton Aggies fend off Pirates in both games

HAMILTON — The Hamilton Aggies swept both varsity games against the visiting Winfield Pirates on Friday night, Jan. 5.
The girls’ game saw the Lady Aggies win by a wide margin after rocketing to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Lady Aggies scored 18 more in the second quarter while only allowing 9 from the Lady Pirates.
The Lady Aggies kept up the pace, scoring 29 more points in the second half compared to only nine more from Winfield.
The Lady Aggies won the game 61-18,
Emily Jones scored the most points for the Lady Aggies with 19 points, along with 3 rebounds.
Aubrey Sorrells, who broke 2,000 career points during the game, scored 15 points matched by 15 rebounds.
Ella Kelley scored 8 points and made 4 rebounds, Brilyn Gilstrap scored 6 points and made 2 rebounds, Jordan Parker and Meg Wiginton scored 4 points each and Danidi Weghorst scored 3 points.
Parker also recorded 6 rebounds, and Wiginton had 5.
Isabella Cantrell scored 2 points.
For the Lady Pirates, Julie Anderson scored 6 points and made 3 rebounds, Jayci Griffin and Made Grace Lewis scored 4 points each and Milleigh Miles and Brayleigh Bolton scored 2 points each.
Kennah Beth Lacy and Miles made 5 rebounds each. Bolton recorded 6. Lewis, Griffin and Anderson made 3 rebounds each.
The varsity boys’ game was much closer, ending with a narrow 3-point difference.
The Pirates opened strong, scoring 25 points in the first quarter to Hamilton’s 15.
But the Aggies gained traction in the second quarter, scoring 17 points to the Pirates’ 11.
The Pirates held a close 36-32 lead going into halftime, and the fight was on for the second half.
The Aggies kept up the pace, and the third quarter ended with the Aggies 1 point ahead at 56-55.
The fourth quarter was close, but the Aggies managed to stay just one step ahead of the Pirates and ended up winning the game 69-66.
Mason Holloway led the Aggies’ scoring with 19 points.
Kelton Battle scored 15 points, Hunter Galbreath scored 12 points, Spencer Tyra scored 10 points, Joshua Webb scored 6, Dylan Frederick scored 5 and Kevin McBride scored 2.
Battle also snagged 5 rebounds, followed by McBride with 4, Galbreath with 3 and Holloway and Webb with 1 each.
For the Pirates, Slate Gilbert led the way with 27 points and 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.
Sean Wyers scored 23 points and made 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal.
