HAMILTON — The Northwest Alabama Gas District, also known as Northwest Gas, serves more than 20,000 customers across the state, with a special new customer recently added through the construction of the newest Pilot Travel Center in Winfield on Interstate-22.

Participating Marion County 4-H youth are “oinking it up” by raising pigs for the annual Pig Squeal coming up next month.

Participating Marion County 4-H youth are “oinking it up” by raising pigs for the annual Pig Squeal coming up next month. The event will be held on Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m., at the Fayette County Multipurpose Complex at 650 McConnell Loop in Fayette.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has awarded nearly $297,000 to improve public safety in north Alabama, including $50,000 to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office “to purchase stun guns aimed at de-escalating dangerous situations and preventing injuries to both suspects and deputies.”

Marion County native first ever police chief of Detroit

DETROIT — For the first time in its incorporated history, a span of 70 years, the Town of Detroit now has its first police chief. Robert Bryan McCraw, of Hamilton, was hired and sworn in as the town’s police chief on Monday, March 17, at Detroit Town Hall by Mayor Keith King. McCraw retired as the police chief for Guin and has also formerly worked with the Franklin County heriff’s Department.

HALEYVILLE — The dangers of burning during dry conditions were experienced in a traumatic way Tuesday afternoon, March 11, when a brush fire spread out of control to consume a mobile unit, destroy a vehicle and displace a family with children.

VFW formation meeting set for March 25 at HPD

HAMILTON — If eligible veterans throughout Marion County and the surrounding areas are interested in forming a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post in Hamilton, they should attend a meeting on Tuesday, March 25, at the Hamilton Police Department Auditorium at 6 p.m.
VFW Post 5184 Russellville Commander Eric Reason and his post are sponsoring the possible startup and will be at the meeting to answer questions and provide guidance.

GUIN — The Guin City Council passed a resolution during its meeting on Monday, March 3, to honor the late Dr. Gary Randolph for his many years of service to the city of Guin as not only a doctor, but also as a member of the city council.
