Winfield Pirates defeat the Shoals Christian Flame 68-45

WINFIELD — The Winfield Pirates hosted to Shoals Christian Flame on Friday, Dec. 1, and split a win and loss between the boys’ and girls’ teams.
The varsity girls played first, and both teams were neck-and-neck through the whole game.
The Lady Pirates scored 11 points in the first quarter to the Flame’s nine points. The Flame scored 16 in the second quarter to the Lady Pirates’ 14, leaving the game tied at 25-25 going into halftime.
The game remained tied for a big chunk of the third quarter, until a three-pointer from Peyton Burroughs set the Pirates up with a brief lead with two minutes to go in the third quarter.
The Lady Pirates ended the third quarter with a tight 31-30 lead thanks to a free throw by Kennah Beth Lacy.
The fourth quarter was a fierce battle, with more lead changes and ties.
Julie Anderson drilled a three-pointer for the Lady Pirates to tie the game 38-38 with under three minutes left in the game, but the Flame began to pull ahead, and despite another three-pointer from Anderson, the Flame ended up winning 46-41.
Anderson scored 15 points, and made seven rebounds.
Lacy scored 11 points and made 13 rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Jayci Griffin scored seven points, grabbed four rebounds and made one assist.
Brayleigh Bolton scored two points and made six rebounds and two steals.
Burroughs scored three points.
The boys’ game also started off as a fairly close game.
The Pirates ended the first quarter with a 12-9 lead, and went into halftime with a 29-23 lead.
In the third quarter, the Pirates began to gain a much larger lead, scoring 18 points while only allowing eight.
The Pirates were leading 47-31 when the fourth quarter began. The Flame picked up the pace slightly, scoring 14 points in the final quarter, but the Pirates also picked up the pace, scoring 21 points to win the game 68-45.
Slate Gilbert scored 22 points, along with seven rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Sean Wyers scored 17 points, along with eight rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Haiden Channell scored eight points and made six rebounds.
Preston Nelson scored nine points, along with two rebounds, one assist and two steals.
Miles Miles scored five points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Kruz Box scored five points and made one rebound.
Keylan Hughes scored two points and made four rebounds.
Earlier in the week, the Pirates played at Haleyville.
