BEAR CREEK — The Phillips Bears’ home opener didn’t go as they would have liked, thanks in part to a bad case of the penalty bug, which allowed the Vina Red Devils to win 28-6 and start their season 2-0 for the first time since 2005.
Vina got on the board twice on the march toward halftime. The Bears had a shot late in the half when Dorian Hernandez picked a Red Devil pass, but the penalty plague struck again, and the Red Devils got the ball back, much to the consternation of Bears fans. The Red Devils scored one more time to make it 22-0 at the end of the first half.
Hernandez got another interception in the third, but the Bears were not able to capitalize on it, and Vina was up 28-0 to start the final quarter.
Trey Tidwell got the Bears on the board with 7:17 left on the clock. The two-point try failed, and the Bears lost 28-6.
The Bears will be at home again this week, taking on Meek in a regional matchup.
