Ida Joann (Pennington) Hall

Ida Joann (Pennington) Hall, affectionately known as Joann, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. She was born July 5, 1934, in Sulligent, Ala., the 9th of 10 children born to the late Eddie and Ramah Pennington. She received her education in the Alabama school system and was a graduate of Lamar County High School.

Petra Davis

Mrs. Petra Dollar Davis, 66, of Winfield went to be with the Lord on Aug. 1, 2024, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born on Aug. 10, 1957, in Munich, Germany. Petra was adopted at 5 months old by Fred and Carmoleta Dollar. She was a member of Mosaic United Methodist Church of Winfield and a graduate of Fayette County High School. Petra loved to cook, bake, watch Alabama football even living in a house divided, her husband Roger, her family, her dog, Maycee, and God.

Janice Clark

Janice Clark, 82, of Hamilton, passed away July 25, 2024, at her residence.
Services were held on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at the Hamilton First Baptist Church. Burial followed at Cooper Cemetery.

Larry Dean

Almus Larry Dean, 89, on July 23, 2024, took one last helicopter hop and returned to base. Happy Landing! Semper Fi. Do not mourn that which is lost.  Instead, rejoice in what you enjoyed.
He was born on March 19, 1935, in Durham, N.C. to Almus Lester and Elizabeth Wilson Deans.  Larry and his brother and sister lived at the Barium Springs Orphanage in North Carolina for about nine years before being reunited with their mother and stepfather.

Lane Emerson

William Lane Emerson, 54, of Florence passed away on May 24, 2024 at ECM in Florence. Lane was born to Joseph and Sue Osbirn Emerson on Sept. 20 1969, at Gilmore Hospital in Amory, Miss.
After graduating from Hamilton High School in 1987. Lane enrolled at Itawamba Community College where Lane then transferred to the University of North Alabama. There, he completed his degree in fine arts/graphic design. After graduation, Lane begin teaching at Bevill State Community College in Hamilton. Lane was employed there as the only art professor on that campus.

John Richard Lindley

John Richard Lindley, 37, of Detroit, Ala. passed away July 24, 2024, in the UAB Medical Center in Birmingham.
John Richard Lindley was born on Oct. 13, 1986, in Tupelo to Anthony Lindley and Rhonda Duncan Lindley. He attended Hamilton High School and graduated as an LPN from Bevill State Community College. John Richard worked with Northwest Alabama Mental Health Center and loved his patients dearly. He was a member of the Kingsville Church of Christ. John Richard used every opportunity he had to spread the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Joseph Miles

Joseph Ray Miles, 32, formerly of Guin, passed away at his home in Asheville, N.C. from an accidental overdose with a substance laced with fentanyl. He fought a long battle with addiction and had recently experienced freedom, joy and true happiness with over 4 months of sobriety.

Melvin Phillips

 Melvin Millard Phillips, 87, of Hamilton, formerly of Guin in the Pea Ridge community, passed away at his residence on Friday, July 19, 2024. He was born Aug. 15, 1936, in Marion County, Ala. He was the son of the late George Willis and Dora Elizabeth Franks Phillips.
He was a member of the Free Water Freewill Baptist Church and often played piano or organ during services. After working various jobs in Illinois and Alabama, he worked at the former Continental Conveyor for 35 years, which he retired from in Aug. 1998.

James Palmer

James Leo Palmer Jr. 85, of Dixon, Ky. was born on Jan. 18th, 1939, in Brilliant and passed away on July 25th, 2024, in Newburgh, Ind. James was passionate about a few things, and if you spent any time with him at all, you would most certainly hear about them: his faith, his family and Alabama football. James preached his last sermon at Poole Church of Christ on June 30th, 2024, just days before he was called to his heavenly home. He leaves behind a family and church community who loved him dearly and strive to follow in his footsteps as they pursue Jesus.

Peggy Weeks

 Mrs. Peggy Carole Norris Weeks, 81, of Winfield passed away on July 19, 2024, in the Fayette Medical Center. Mrs. Weeks was born in Brilliant on November 2, 1942, to Cleo and Irene Caudle Norris. Peggy was a member of the Winfield Church of Christ. She was a 1961 graduate of Winfield High School and later attended Ailene Christian College. Peggy was employed as a bookkeeper for T.E. Lott Company in Columbus, Miss. until her retirement. In her spare time, Peggy enjoyed doing yard work and spending time with family.

Mack Franks

McDavid "Mack" Ray Franks passed away on July 20, 2024, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born on October 4, 1937, in Brilliant to David Franks and Robert and Verna Mae Galloway. Mack went to Fayette High School and served in the United States Navy. He lived in Hamilton for 53 years, was employed by the telephone company for 35 years and was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge.  Mack was a member of the Hamilton Church of Christ and enjoyed leading the hymns. In his spare time, he liked to work in his yard, take his puppy for walks, and spend time with his family.

Becky Hubbert

Mrs. Rebecca Kay Hubbert, also known as “Becky”, 62, of Winfield passed away on July 25, 2024, in the Diversicare Nursing Facility. Becky was born in Winfield on September 24, 1961, to Wyman and Addie Lou Nix Tarwater. She was a member of Shepherd’s Field Church and attended Marion County High School. Becky was a devoted mother and spent much of her life as a stay-at-home mom caring for her three sons. She enjoyed painting, decorating, shopping, and spending time with family and friends in her spare time.

Greg Shaw

Mr. Gregory Dean Shaw, better known as Greg, 60, of Hubbertville passed away on July 21, 2024, in the UAB Medical Center. Greg was born on May 11, 1964, to James Shaw and Connie Kimbrell Montgomery. He attended Hubbertville High School and served in the Army National Guard for 13 years. He was a truck driver, moving mobile homes and hauling logs. Greg was a loving family man and provider to his family. He loved his family and spending time with them and teaching them the value of hard work and enjoying the little things in life like fishing.

Betty Vickery

Mrs. Betty Jean Vickery, 90, of Winfield passed away on July 18, 2024. Mrs. Vickery was born in Marion County on June 22, 1934, to Bryan and Ollie Beasley Marcum. Betty was a member of the Hillcrest Church of Christ. She spent much of her life as a homemaker caring for her husband and children. In her spare time Betty enjoyed working outside in her flower beds, gardening, cooking, and spending time with her family.

Dora Atkinson

Mrs. Dora Lee Atkinson, 91, of Winfield passed away on July 17, 2024, in the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.  Mrs. Atkinson was born in Alabama to Leslie and Minnie Trimm. Dora was married to Carl Ray Atkinson in 1952 and was a member of Winfield Freewill Baptist Church. She worked for Health-Tex Manufacturing in Guin until her retirement.  After her retirement, she volunteered with the Christian Center of Concern until its closure. She spent her life dedicated to her church, family, and children. She enjoyed sewing for people in her shop and growing large gardens.

Jimmie Ray Casey

Jimmie Ray Casey, 77, of Guin passed away peacefully at his residence on July 13, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Jimmie was born on November 28, 1946, in Russellville.  He was the son of the late Williard Ray and Agnes Palmer Casey and the husband of Margaret Markham Casey.

Georgia Faye Burleson Galbreath, 85, of Hamilton passed away on July 13, 2024, at her son’s residence. She was born in Marion County on February 26,1939, to Hudson Burleson and Vella Wiginton Burleson.

Ann James

Mrs. Ann James, better known as Ann or “Nanna”, 80, of Winfield passed away on July 15, 2024, in the Grandview Medical Center. Ann “Nanna” was born in Benton, Ark. on November 23, 1943, to Charles Ferman and Ruby McDonald May. Ann “Nanna” was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Winfield and a graduate of Deshler High School. She spent much of her life as a homemaker caring for her family.

Mary Vintson

Mrs. Mary E. Vintson, 81, of Winfield passed away on Friday, July 12, 2024, in the DCH Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. She was born in Centre, Ala. on December 29, 1942, to Claud Trantham and Verna Louise Owens Carroll. Mary was a member of Guin First Baptist Church. She was employed with Walmart of Winfield as an associate and later as assistant manager until her retirement after 30 years of service. Mary loved God, she dearly loved her husband Jim, and she loved her children and grandchildren.

Barbara Stiles

Mrs. Barbara Joyce Maddox Stiles, 74, of Winfield passed away on Friday, July 12, 2024, at her home. Mrs. Stiles was born in Fayette on August 10, 1949, to Leamon and Exie South Maddox. She was a member of the Brilliant Methodist Church and a graduate of Fayette County High School. Barbara retired from the phone company as supervisor of phone service installation. She continued to work after retirement with Drive Line as a merchandiser. Barbara loved gardening, her family and spoiling her fur baby, Toby, and her nieces and nephews, whom she treated like her own children.

Erma Dean Davis, 83, of Hackleburg passed away on June 25, 2024, at her residence. She was born in Haleyville on January 28, 1941, to Richard Lee Farris and Lella Cagel Farris.

Delores Griffin

Mrs. Delores Corcoran Griffin, 81, of Niceville, Fla. formerly of Winfield, passed away on June 29, 2024, surrounded by her family.  Delores was born in Memphis, Tenn. on March 29, 1943, to Fred and Lenora Ratliff Dacus.  Mrs. Griffin was a graduate of Bartlett High School in Bartlett, Tenn. While living in Alabama, she was a faithful member of the Brilliant Church of God. Delores was a caregiver to many, a homemaker to her family and an avid reader. Most of all, she enjoyed  making new friends and traveling.

Mike Pridemore

Mr. Jay Michael Pridmore, better known as Mike,  63, of Winfield passed away on June 26, 2024, in the DCH Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. Mike was born in Moline, Ill. on July 6, 1960, to James and Grace Norris Pridmore. He attended Eldridge Church of Christ. Mike was a 1978 graduate of Winfield High School and was a very talented shortstop in baseball. Mike received college baseball scholarship offers to continue his play after high school, but he decided on a different route; he married his high school sweetheart Debbie Box. They were happily married for almost 45 years.

Jarrad Tesney

Mr. Jarrad Lee Tesney, 40, of Brilliant passed away on  July 2, 2024, at his residence. Jarrad was born March 6, 1984, in Georgia to James Tesney and Virginia Skelton. He attended Marion County High School. Jarrad spent much of his life employed with ADM River Boats as an engineer. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, golfing and playing video games.

Lila Tomaw

Mrs. Lila Rae Tomaw, 74, of Hamilton, passed away on Saturday June 29, 2024, in the North Mississippi Medical Center. Mrs. Tomaw was born in Danville, Ill. on July 25, 1949, to Raymond Clarence and Eleanor Sykes Ollis. Lila spent much of her life caring for others as a private in-home caregiver. In her spare time, she enjoyed working puzzles, watching the Hallmark Channel and Food TV and spending time with her great-granddaughters.

Terry Anderson

Terry Anderson, 79, of Winfield, passed away Friday, June 21, 2024, at his residence.
Born June 29, 1944, in Barrie, Vt., he was the son of the late George Philip and Evelyn Myra Guyette Anderson and the husband of Sadie Stafford Anderson.  He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, retired from Roadway Trucking Company and was a member of the Landmark Church.
He is survived by his wife, Sadie Anderson of Winfield; daughters, Kathy Anderson and Cheryl Anderson of Springfield, Mo.; son, Kevin Anderson of Wichita, Kan.; and several grandchildren.

June Byrd

Mrs. Edith June Mixon Byrd, 73, of Hamilton passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Mrs. Byrd was born in Haleyville on September 6, 1950, to Berlon and Wilma Hightower Ballard. She attended the Barnesville Freewill Baptist Church and was a 1968 graduate of Hamilton High School where she served as homecoming queen and cheerleader. After high school, she attended Northwest Alabama Technical College where she earned her barber certificate. June worked in the community as a barber until the birth of her children.

Arthur Hanson

Arthur Dewey Hanson, 70, of Winfield passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at DCH Tuscaloosa.  He was born on June 06,1954, to Author J. Hanson and Opal Lou Baker Hanson.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Kim Hanson; sons, Matthew Hanson, Jimmy Hanson and Andy Hanson; siblings, James Hanson, George Hanson, Charles Hanson, Shirley Hosch, Bertie Parkera and Gege Stidham; grandchildren, Christopher Hanson, Jeremia Hanson, Isaiah Garcia, Isabella Rojas, Angelia Hanson and Haley Hanson; and a host nieces, nephews and friends.

Mr. James Emerson Norris, 88, of the Twin area passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at his residence. Mr. Norris was born in Guin on February 1, 1936, to Emerson and Annie Dickinson Norris. James was a member of Liberty Free Will Baptist Church. He was employed for much of his life as a crane operator with Alabama Bridge Builders until his retirement. In his spare time, James enjoyed farming, hunting, and riding his tractor.

Jackson Umfress

Jackson Brodie Umfress, our beloved son, brother, grandson, and nephew, ran into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, June 15, 2024. Jackson was born on October 30, 2006 in Gulfport, Miss. to Ryan and Shellie Umfress.He was a senior at Hamilton High School, Class of 2025, where he was a gifted athlete who excelled in football and basketball. He was an all-around well loved member of the HHS student body.
