Winfield hosts Christmas Classic

WINFIELD — The Winfield Pirates hosted teams from all around the area on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 29-30, 2022, during Winfield’s annual Christmas Classic.
Teams from Marion, Winston, Lamar, Walker and Lauderdale counties competed, and Lawrence County from Tennessee also traveled to play at the Winfield City High School gymnasium.
Brilliant’s girls were the first Marion County team to compete, taking on Lamar County on Thursday. The Lady Tigers lost 52-27.

Winfield hosts WAC tournament

WINFIELD — Winfield City High School is the host of this year’s West Alabama Conference tournament, which began Friday, Dec. 16, and concluded Monday, Dec. 19.
The Winfield Lady Pirates played against the Fayette County High School Lady Tigers in the first round of the tournament on Friday night.
The Lady Pirates and Lady Tigers fought tooth and nail throughout the entire game. The first quarter ended in a 7-7 tie, and at the end of the second quarter, the Lady Pirates led by one point 16-15.

Lady Pirates snag first win against Lady Raiders

GUIN —  The Winfield Lady Pirates defeated the Marion County Lady Raiders 60-50 on Thursday, Dec. 1
The Lady Pirates’ first victory of the season brings their record to 1-4.
It was a close game through the first quarter, which ended with both teams tied 10-10. But the Lady Pirates pulled ahead in the second quarter, scoring 18 points to Marion County’s nine and going into the locker room at half time with a 28-19 lead over the Lady Raiders.

Winfield Pirates break in Colts in regional semi-final game

HANCEVILLE — Severe weather wasn’t enough to stop the Pirates’ winning streak on Thursday night, Feb. 17, at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville.
The Pirates faced off against the Clements Colts in the 3A Northwest Regional semi-finals.
The Colts took the lead in the first quarter, leading the Pirates by five points, 17-12. But the Pirates turned up the heat in the second quarter, scoring 21 points while holding the Colts to eight.
At the half, the Pirates were leading 33-25.

Winfield girls fall to Oakman

WINFIELD — On Monday, Feb. 7, the Winfield Lady Pirates lost to the Oakman Lady Wildcats 37-32 at home.
The Lady Wildcats pounced to an early 14-6 lead in the first quarter, before the Lady Pirates started to close the gap in the second quarter, reducing Oakman’s lead to 19-15.
In the third quarter, Oakman scored 14 more points to Winfield’s 11, setting the stage for the fourth quarter at 33-26.
The Lady Pirates fought to close the gap again, but were five points shy when the buzzer sounded, and the Lady Wildcats won 37-32.

Winfield boys basketball wins continue

The Winfield Pirates boys and girls teams saw differing outcomes this week as the boys continued on their winning streak and the girls met a series of losses.
On Saturday, Oct. 22, the boys traveled to New Albany, Miss., and won 73-49. The first quarter was close, ending with both teams tied at 13-13, but the Pirates picked up speed and kept it up while the New Albany Bulldogs just couldn’t keep up.

Winfield vs. MCHS
The Winfield Pirates won convincingly against the Marion County Red Raiders in their opening game in the Marion County Tournament in Brilliant Tuesday, Jan. 18.
Winfield was able to win 71-44, with Logan Feltman, Will Beasley and Ja’borri McGhee leading the scoring for the Pirates.
Feltman scored 22, going 50 percent from the field, while Beasley scored 18 and McGhee scored 14.
Beasley was impressive from range, scoring six three pointers in the game out of his 14 three-point attempts.

Winfield fells Oakman

WINFIELD — The Winfield Pirates took on the Oakman Wildcats on Thursday night, Jan. 13. The Lady Pirates defeated the Lady Wildcats 66- 14. Winfield’s boys beat the Wildcats 81- 45.

The girls started off strong in the first quarter with 24 points to Oakman’s 2. The Lady Pirates held steady through the rest of the game, only allowing 10 points in the second quarter, 2 in the third quarter and none in the fourth.
